The diverse sources Chickering uses help highlight the social, economic, and psychological pressures facing the civilians of a city situated close to the French frontier during this period. This book is quite lengthy, so you might want to review a shorter and earlier volume by Chickering called Imperial Germany and the Great War (Cambridge), which appeared in 1998.
