One of the biggest losers of World War I was the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which as a result of its defeat saw its empire being dissolved into several smaller countries. Another effect of the defeat and splitting of the empire were the loss of its navy. Where the most senior officers ended up seems to be well documented but the fate of the ships, lower officers and sailors are not that clear. According to Wikipedia the navy was confiscated, but further information than that seems to be hard to find.
So my question is: what happened to the ships, officers and sailors of the Austro-Hungarian navy after the war?
Most of the ships were allocated to the new state of Yugoslavia, Italy, France and Britain, with those allocated to Britain and France being broken up in Italy. Those allocated to Italy were broken up in Italy, those allocated to Yugoslavia seemed to have been laid up in Pula/Pola pending breaking up, but no records were kept of their fate. "Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships, 1860-1905" describes the ultimate fates, where known, of the ships of the Austrian Navy. The Officers and Seamen of the Navy adopted the nationality of their homes. Hence Admiral Horthy returned to Hungary and Captain von Trapp, as examples, returned to Austria. Many, if not the majority of those in the Hapsburg Navy, the seamen especially, were from Istria, and the port cities of the Croatian/Bosnian coastline, like Fiume, Sibenico, Zara and Spalato, and were Italian speaking, as was the Hapsburg Navy itself. They would, therefore, have become Yugoslavs.
