Check out William Cronon's "Changes in the Land," or even just the Wikipedia entry for the book. Cronon examines the different conceptions of land use held by English and Indians during the early colonial period and argues that those differing conceptions did indeed lead to the Indians being taken advantage of by European colonists. Fascinating stuff, and treated with nuance from the perspective of ecology rather than the more narrow angle of "property."
