Why was the Nazi Engima Machine in English?

by deltaalphanovember

All depictions of the Nazi enigma machine have an English keyboard. Why was it an English keyboard and not a German one?

The keyboard layout of an Enigma machine is German (QWERTZ rather than QWERTY), albeit not quite standard; messages encoded by Enigma did not include spaces or punctuation so there are no corresponding keys on the keyboard, the 'P' and 'L' keys are therefore relocated to the bottom row of the keyboard to save space. For special characters, letters with umlauts had an 'e' appended ("ä" was typed as "ae", "ö" as "oe" and "ü" as "ue"), and an eszett ("ß") was typed as "ss" or "sz".

Are you sure? All the images I can find on a quick image search such as this oneshow the usual German layout- "QWERTZIO" along the top row.
