It is astonishing how close the world actually came to nuclear war. I recommend watching the film The Fog of War (2003) if you want to know more. Or look up what Robert McNamara (US Secretary of Defense at the time) has to say on the matter. It's worth watching him speak on it, but he attributes the fact there wasn't nuclear war to luck.
