Who are the soldiers in this image of the Berlin Wall?

by -Nolder-

Very sorry if this isn't allowed here but I've been trying to find context on this image and searching news stories on the internet is not working. Places seem to just love plopping down any image without a caption. Really hope you guys can help. Anyway can anyone tell which side the soldiers on the Wall belong to? Thanks.

A Google image search (if you're using Chrome for example, you can just right-click the image and select "search Google for this image") turns up this story http://history.howstuffworks.com/historical-events/berlin-wall.htm crediting the photo to photographer Tom Stoddart/Getty Images, and including the caption

A quick search of the GettyImages site confirms. Here's the photo http://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/east-german-border-guards-try-to-prevent-a-crowd-climbing-news-photo/52957595 with the same caption
