I am writing a novel, and I got a good portion into it before I realized that I was still calling it a driveway, despite the fact that there are no cars in this novel. It just seems a bit out of place, but maybe I am wrong.
While there is no set time period or location, I think it would be safe to say it's modeled around England, and they do use carriages for transportation, if they are not walking. So what would this long path for carriages and people on foot be called?
The word 'drive' far predates the automobile. You will find a multitude of references to driving cattle, wagons, horses, carts.
You do have the term 'dooryard' used sometimes for the land in front of the door or entrance. But that is an early US term I believe.
You could also describe, 'the long, tree lined, approach to the house' or some such. If you're not sure about a word, then find a work around that feels right. Writing is art not science!
