Aglets are the bit of plastic taped at the end of shoe-laces to keep them from unravelling. What do we know about when and how they were invented?

I don't know the history of plastic aglets, but I was looking at an archaeological excavation of a 7th century English cemetery yesterday, and a few of the bodies had brass aglets on their shoe laces (they looked a lot like the modern plastic versions). They weren't common through the whole middle ages after that, but people have been choosing to use them on and off for a really long time.
