Cultures are always changing, and even isolated tribes that have little contact with the outside world still engage with the events and changing social and environmental conditions that surround them.

So this becomes a very tricky question to answer. China is a modern nation, but you can trace pieces of their culture back thousands of years; does that mean their culture is ancient, or modern? It really depends on what you want to measure (language, diet, religion, art, clothing...?). And each thing that you may choose to measure is a mixture of older cultural practices and innovations and changes to the changing world people live in.

As a result, historians tend to shy away from questions like the one you asked. Instead, we prefer questions like: how have older traditions influenced the shape of modern cultures? and, how do new cultural movements use or invent traditions from the past to change the world they live in in the present?
