Watching John Cusack's movie City Hall, and the mayor character played by Al Pacino claims to quote the Athens leader Pericles, "All good things on this Earth flow into the City."
I thought this was a pretty cool quote. But in trying to verify it by googling, the only results I could find were people referencing this movie or Bioshock. Is this something Pericles actually said?
It's attributed to Pericles in the so-called "funeral oration" by Thucydides 2.38. The original text is
ἐπεσέρχεται δὲ διὰ μέγεθος τῆς πόλεως ἐκ πάσης γῆς τὰ πάντα
but it's a slight mistranslation: more exactly, it would be "because of (our) city's size, all things come into it from the entire world". From a purely realistic point of view it's wishful thinking to attribute this to Pericles himself, as Thucydides quite openly admits making up the speeches that he reports. But it is authentic, to the extent that such an indirect quotation can be authentic.
(Edit. Purely as a point of interest, I note that the misquotation in City Hall in turn gets quoted in the video game BioShock, in the player's initial arrival at the city of Rapture.)
