Not sûre, but in some cultures it is doubtlessly ancient and deeply rooted. I recently came across Innu translation of mining-related documents, and the Innu language cannot translate the concept of mining without the concept of "opening up our Mother Earth". It'd' be interesting to comparé with other algonquian languages. Of course, the concept probably popped up independantly and unrelatedly in various cultures at various times.
