Remember in War horse when Benedict Cumberbatch’s cavalry officer character is taken captive in France like a handful of days into WW1. Where would someone like him have been taken? And is likely that he’d still be alive at the end of the war?

As he was an officer he would most likely have been put into an officer camp, which had better conditions than the regular camps. These were located in Germany, normally in buildings rather than in tents. None of these camps were found in East Prussia, as conditions were seen as too harsh. Officers in these camps did not have to work, instead involving themselves in sports, concerts and even lectures. Officers were even allowed to go on walks outside the camps if they signed that they would not try to escape. POWs were treated very differently in WWI compared to WWII, being in a camp was probably better than fighting on the front line. The officer was very likely to have survived the war, but it would have been a very different story 25 years later.
