I was reading the thread about Missouri declaring a state of emergency and came across a post about the Tulsa race Riot. I had absolutely no idea about it. I never even heard it mentioned in school. What are some similar events in recent US history that the average person would probably not know about?
I'm happy to answer, but this is a pretty tough question, since we don't know what the average person knows. What might be common knowledge for you and I might be unknown outside our circle of friends, our state, or our region.
Since you're talking about the Tulsa Riot, how about a similar incident that happened in 1898 on the East Coast? Meet the Wilmington Insurrection or the Wilmington Coup.
This took place in fall, 116 years ago, as a group of white supremacists marched on Wilmington's city hall and successfully deposed the elected government, which included whites and blacks working together. The insurrection was carefully planned by North Carolina Democrats, who were aggressively racist and trying to unseat the biracial Republican majority in North Carolina.
The success of the Wilmington Insurrection and other -- less obviously violent -- events across the state led to the creation of a Democratic majority. This majority proceeded to pass a series of Jim Crow laws that restricted black voting and ensured Democratic dominance of the state for the next 60-70 years.
