Watching Band of Brothers with the SO and we finished that episode last night. At the end it says that particular engagement is still used at West Point in classrooms (as of the shows release). It's pretty hard to follow the tactical maneuvers in the show obviously. So what was it they did so well?
Its largely considered an excellent, almost textbook attack on a fixed position. The 'meat and potatoes' of small-unit infantry action being a rapid gain of fire superiority along with rapid and decisive flanking.
The BoB episode gets quite a bit wrong; straight down to the layout of the trenches, but I digress, it gets the spirit of it down.
The reason its considered so impressive is largely because of the numbers game; this was a greatly understrength, ad-hoc unit attacking an enemy of a larger size in fixed positions. The assaulting force moved so rapidly that the Germans allegedly and famously began to shift their fire to positions they still controlled in an attempt to suppress and halt the movement of the paratroopers.
This becomes doubly impressive when you consider that a German rifle squad often had a dizzying amount of firepower on its American counterparts. To gain fire superiority, even for a short while, and utilize it to its fullest showed a lot of tactical acumen from Winters.
