While my main area of research is German PWs in the United States, numerous oral histories I have used indicate that compared to their treatment in the United States, German prisoners forced to work in France and England found their time their much more difficult than in America. The British and French naturally despised the Germans more than the Americans did. As a result, German PWs sent to France and Germany did not receive the same level of care they had experienced in the United States. For example, Britain and France both forced German prisoners to clear mines and conduct other extremely dangerous jobs. Many German PWs also lost significant weight under British and French supervision and many times were also beaten. The war did not end for many of the German PWs forced into labor in Britain and France until 1947, when they were finally sent back home.
