Did Native Americans believe in land ownership?

by MatsuMatsu

I'm confused because that was the way it was taught to me, yet in an AskReddit thread someone is claiming that Native Americans definitely believed in owning land and that them not doing so was just a "white myth".

I also understand they were a very diverse group and different tribes will have different answers...

Thank you for asking. A flaired expert on Native Americans of the Eastern woodlands posted a great answer to this question in another thread. His post should give you a good place to start.

How did Native Americans view land ownership?

summary:

American Natives were far too diverse to define all of them with nearly any statement. For the Natives the English colonists interacted with most the issue wasn't a matter of lack of land ownership so much as a different definition.
