In the Roman period of the 400s biblical leader Augustine, the creator of the idea of 'original sin', used the idea to justify slavery in the roman empire.

Charles Freeman, in his book The Closing of the Western Mind, talks about Augstines justification that "God's punishment even extended to life on earth, so that the slave is a slave because God wishes him punished."
