What was the main USAF air superiority fighter before F-X/Light Fighter program?

by darksparten

The closest things I've seen are Century series craft like F-104 and F-105, which are more interceptors/strike craft than real fighters. The navy had the F-4 and A-8, but what did the USAF have?

The F-4 Phantom II. In fact the Air force was the largest user of the F4 even more then the Navy. it was just called the F-110 Spectre until the 1962 United States Tri-Service aircraft designation system.

F-4C 583 of them.

F-4D 825 of them.

F-4E 1370 of them.

Here is a list of the variants.

As already mentioned, the F-4 served both the Navy and Air Force.

But just to nitpick, I believe you mean the F-8. I'm guessing perhaps you confused 8t with the A-7 Corsair? (Superficially they look very similar, as the A-7 was actually based roughly on the F-8.)
