I read that American temperance in the 19th century was linked to and possibly a result of the massive Irish immigration due to the potato famine. Is this true?

Definitely they are connected! Many Irish immigrated to the U.S. as well as Germans. Both were heavy drinkers among the other dislikes of these immigrants (Irish being Catholic etc.). So in the 2nd great awakening many people sought temperance movements such as the American Temperance Society which was indirectly aimed at the Irish immigrants.
