In terms of setting up the camp. They would firstly outline the fort and then from there would pick a place to set up the different sections of the camp e.g. Commanders tent, Legionnaires and so on. Once they had done that the soldiers began to dig the ditches in order to put up the palislades around the camp.

Once it was set up that was when the tents were put up. If they were at the danger of being attacked men of the army would split to defend whilst the others continued the building.

They still had the time and energy to march because it didn't take that long to set up. The fact that everything was pre-planneed meant that everyone knew their role and what needed to be done which is the first step towards efficiency. The fact then that eventually they would be very good at building these forts meant that they were put up quite quickly.
