Recommend some books to me!

Having recently finished a several year long binge of Fantasy and Science Fiction Books I think I'm prepared to sink my teeth into something with some significance. I'm looking for some books on various topics that are written in an approachable and entertaining manner. I think of Dan Carlin's style of narrative explanation, or that of Bill Bryson, or Charles C. Mann whose 1492 I found fascinating! I listen to Audiobooks on my way to and from work (and sometimes at work) more often than I read anymore but I'm open to either.

Came upon this looking for something for myself. FYI you're asking a lot of work from people which is probably why no one's responded. Plus you never actually asked anyone to do this ton of work, you just kind of expected/demanded it. A title like "Can you recommend some books to me?" would probably have helped you a fair bit.

Anyhow, speculation aside I suggest using the book list in the wiki. Given your already spelled out list of interests and how they've organized their recommendations you should be like a kid in a candy store there.
