The species was named by Linnaeus himself back in 1758. source.

No idea why he picked that name, though it's in general fairly common to name organisms after the place they were collected from, so that's one possibility.

EDIT: I tried to track down the reference in an online copy of that year's edition of Systema naturae to see if there was anything relevent in the description, but I couldn't find it.
