What would an average week in the life of a Harvard student be like in 1650? 1700? 1750?

1850, 1900, and 1950?

  • What could they study? What was the tuition? Did they receive grades in the sense that we do today?
  • What was the average student's background?
  • What did they do in terms of school work? Write reports and do homework?
  • What did they do in terms of lodgings, food, and laundry?
  • What kind of doors would a Harvard education open for them?

I received The Harvard Book as a prize from the Harvard Alumni Association back in the day and I believe it was the first chapter that contains a description of student life in the 1600s. The visitor was not impressed, saying that the students were indolent and just lounged around all day, and the facilities were not very big.

You should pick up a copy of the book of you're interested in Harvard history. I'm not sure where my copy is, or I'd look up answers for you.
