I've known about the conquests of Alexander and the subsequent propping up of the "Hellenistic" kingdom throughout the the eastern Mediterranean thereafter, but I've never really known what it's effects were. I know that the Macedonians had revolutionised warfare with their use of phalangites to pin the enemy in place and heavy reliance on cavalry to deliver flanking charges and then run the enemy down, but did this change after the Hellenistic kingdoms were established?

Did they recruit natives or rely on Greek colonists? Was there a change in battlefield tactics, troop deployments, recruitment etc? Pretty much all I know about Hellenistic warfare is that the Ptolemies and Seleucids were especially fond of using elephants, but beyond that I know nothing.
