Not very close.
1st a vast number of physicists where Jewish and left Germany fairly quickly as things went under. So there was a talent drought. Aage Niels Bohr, Einstein, Maria Goeppert-Mayer, and Enrico Fermi are examples of expats.
2nd and more importantly Heavy Water was hard to come by. Germany had to get it from Norway and the Allies specifically raided the Heavy Water plant to make sure that did not happen.
3rd Cost. It was Monumentally expensive with no 100% guarenttee that it would work.
4th the leadership that was in charge of the German Atomic program was not as focused as the US where.
One example is, without going into the physics too much, 2 ways it was thought to make a bomb, with Uranium or Plutonium. Each process required a completely different way of doing it. The US said screw it, lets do both and see which one works. They build 2 different cities practically from the ground up creating two different types of nuclear bombs, in effect inventing the bomb twice.

Not close at all. Their fission program was not an atomic bomb research effort — it was a nuclear reactor research effort. They were not too far away from possibly producing a small experimental nuclear reactor, on par with what the US did with CP-1 in 1942. But the distance between that an an atomic bomb would have been many years.
The German Army decided in 1941 that fission was a low-research priority because its chances of success were low, the risks and expenses were high, and it didn't seem like anyone else would manage it either. They also didn't think they'd need it, because in 1941 they were "winning." By the time they got desperate enough to think one might be useful, it was far too late.
