Did anything like that ever happen?
Just a few days before Germany invaded France in May 1940, a German He 111 squadron destined for the French city of Dijon accidentally* dropped 69 bombs on the German city of Freiburg, killing 24 civilians.
(*) Edit: Some 20 years ago, I did some investigations in this case, being a pilot myself. According to historic records, the weather was fine on this day, with good visibility and calm winds. Taking into account the different distances (Landsberg -> Freiburg 125 NM, Landsberg -> Dijon 243 NM), I find it still very hard to believe that the bombing was caused by a navigational error.
