After the split, which Germany was responsible for paying World War I reparations?

by DonDraperMan

Was it East Germany, West Germany, or both? From my understanding, reparations weren't paid off until 2011

Chancellor Adenauer, of West Germany, seems to have discussed the matter of the Versalles debt with London in the 50's. He made a compromise to pay the leftover of the debt in 1953. However, he stated that the interest of external bonds should be payed only after Germany was reunificated. That's why the debt was payed recently in this century.

However, there is no mention of the East in this matter, and no proof if the GDR payed the WW1 reparations, or if the dirigents just ignored the affair until the unification. We know that the Soviet Union, in example, pressured Poland to forgive the Eastern German debt (The repairs for WW2)

Western Germany never repaid any War Reperations, just loans that have been taken to repay the War Reperations in the 1920s. Basically what happened is that the Weimar Republic took those Loans and later Hitler refused to pay back the loans. After the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949 Chancellor Adenauer told the allies that the repayments of the loans has to wait until the reunification of Germany or it would really hurt Germanys economy. The GDR on the other side did not even think of itself as follow up state to the German Empire so they did not pay anything at all
