I saw some archival footage in a documentary about the atomic bombs where members of the US air force (I assume) were writing on the bombs themselves. The text was unreadable and I was wondering if any of you guys knew who they were/what they wrote.
They wrote their names, mostly. One photo (guy writing in front is Norman Ramsey, future Nobel Prize winner and part of the assembly team), another, another ("A Second Kiss for Hirohito! W.R. Purnell, Rear Admiral, US Navy"). Similar things were done to the Hiroshima bomb but most were painted over before it was dropped. Generally it was the assembly team, but by the time of the Nagasaki bomb the import of these bombs was more generally known on the island so you get things like rear admirals signing their names.
One other pedantic note - it was the US Army Air Corps as the US Air Force was not officially separated and created until 1947. For what it's worth..
