A Pocahantas Question came up a little while ago. You can find the fuller answer here but the sum of it is that at best, John Smith was severely misunderstanding what was going on in his encounter with Pocahontas, and quite possibly he totally made the story up, since he told a very similar story about his experience in the Ottoman Empire.
