Zeng Guofan wrote to the Tongzhi Emperor after the capture of Nanjing
"Not one of the 100,000 rebels in Nanjing surrendered themselves when the city was taken but in many cases gathered together and burned themselves and passed away without repentance. Such a formidable band of rebels has been rarely known from ancient times to the present."

So according to Zeng Guofan at least, they resisted till the last.
