Paisley has a Persian origin, while houndstooth comes from the Scottish Lowlands. Paisley is the English term for boteh or buta design that dates back over 1000 years ago. It was brought over along with many other Eastern influences to Europe in the very beginning of the 19th century. Wool shawls that had the paisley design woven into them were immensely popular and were even made into gowns. Houndstooth was popularized in the 1930s, the design house De Pinna who included it in their sports wear collection in 1933.
