Was the development and dissemination of the steam engine (James Watt's design) due to everyday factors or to extraordinary ones?

My final for my History class (Technology and Civilization to 1750) is right around the corner and I need a little more insight. First I'm not sure what point to argue; I see both sides. (but for essays thats a big no-no) So I just want to hear some more opinions.

This is what I have thought about so far:

1st Argument: Due to extraordinary factors

  • Watt's engines were unique compared to other engines of this time because he used heat in a 'mysterious' way (brought up a new perspective on heat)

  • Watt had previous learned knowledge about how heat works (He became good friends with his former college professor, Joseph Black, who developed the concept of latent heat and heat capacity)

  • the 1769 patent brought success because it allowed Watt to claim many things as infringements

Thats about all I can come up with right now and those three points are stretching it..

2nd Argument: Due to everyday factors

  • Many people, not just Watt, were working on improving the steam engine (John Smeaton, Long Benton steam engine)
  • Watt used his patent to limit others knowledge and development
  • Society is what made the dissemination of the steam engine due to everyday factors since (hm not sure how to word this right/if this even will make sense) society is an everyday thing, regardless of time period; it is normal and necessary to spread ideas and news through society. Watt explained his invention in terms of horsepower so people had a true understanding of it since the term horsepower was an everyday term.
  • Many other engines were made and in use *Many other people working on improving engines with heat- just as Watt
  • Patent wars were common in this day and age. This fact that people were arguing with Watt's patent proves that Watt's invention was not unique.

Any advice or more ideas? Which argument, in your opinion, would make a great essay?

Most important inventions require both.

In this case it would not have happened without the particular environment. There had to be advances in the related technology of metal casting and working, there had to be someone like Watt's partner Boulton willing to invest over multiple years, and there had to be a need, for example pumping water from mines.

But there also has to be a spark from Watt. The Newcomen steam engine had been around for 50 years before Watt saw that it was thermodynamically inefficient.
