The avro arrow was terminated because of political reasons, not economicals one. (The planes having been already paid and nearly completed).
The main fear was USSR stealing american technologies (motors), and canada being overall more independant. Also, it's "outstanding" performance "never seen before" was common at that time, with the aerodynamics of supersonics plane being explored : it was the decade of the centuries fighters. By the time the Arrow was cancelled, some planes like the Delta Dart or the Mirage III had better performances already.

Avro Canada was a wholly owned part of Hawker Siddeley in the U.K. and the aircraft did enter production. Six were made before the whole thing was shut down. It was the Orenda Iroquois engines that were not within a year of production when the aircraft was cancelled. The project was doomed after the Liberals decided to cancel it in 1957. At that point it was at least four times as expensive as comparable aircraft.
