I have to do a case study, research, inquiry thing. It is about the differing opinions of historians about an event, or topic in regards to a historical period or some sort of historical topic. Any ideas? (for example the Fischer controversy) (I would like an ancient topic)
The subject your teacher has given you is historiography. Since you're not an expert, look through some ancient historiographic surveys to find a subject that is interesting to you. Here are some suggestions:
Neville Morley. Ancient History: Key Themes and Approaches (Routledge, 2000); Theories, models, and concepts in ancient history (Routledge, 2004)
Roger Bagnall. Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient History (Routledge, 1995)
John Marincola. A Companion to Greek and Roman Historiography, 2 volumes (Blackwell, 2007) -- If you only pick one, pick this one.
Michael Bentley. Companion to Historiography, (Routledge, 1997)
Charles Hedwick, Jr. Ancient History: Monuments and Documents (Blackwell, 2006).
Hope this helps a little. Happy reading!
Define 'ancient.'
How ridiculous do you want to go?
Look up Black Athena by Martin Bernal (I dont know if this guy can be considered a historian since everyone disagrees with him)
To dispute it read:
Black Athena Revisited, edited by Mary R. Lefkowitz and Guy MacLean Rogers
Look up the books by John D. Ray and James Weinstein or read what they said about Bernal's hypothesis.
