Is the role of the primitive father as 'hunter-gatherer' a misconception, what do we know about the Neanderthaloid father's relationship with their children?

I'm interested to know if primitive man played more of an emotional role in raising his young than we like to imagine.

Depending on the time you're interested in, this may be a question we don't have much evidence for. In any case, you'll find people more knowledgable on this subject at /r/askanthropology
