It's a commonly stated factoid that Teddy Roosevelt read one book every day. Is this possible? Did people use to read that quickly and that much in the 19th century?

It always struck me as impossible that anyone could read a book a day. Was this something which was common in the 19th century? Did people have such a different relationship with books back then that this was a thing people did? Were books generally much shorter than today?
