I think he committed seppuku after he was left to surrender or almost being caught.
Minamoto no Tametomo
The story is recorded in The Tales of Hougen. In earlier manuscripts the boat he sunk would have been a pretty small raft so it would be possible.
Though in any case Tales of Hougen is a gunkimonogatari, so it's not 100% reliable.
