The short answer to this is, we didn't start recording years 2014 years ago. We started that long before that. The calendar we use today (in the western world) is the Gregorian calendar which was introduced in 1582, that in turn is a refinement of the Julian calendar which was introduced in 46 BC (by the Gregorian calendar dating).

There have been many other calendars before that. The old Roman calendar (calendar of Numa) started with the founding of Rome in 753 BC for example.
