Early stock trading was more like investment that what we think of today. Lacking any official location investors would meet in the collection of coffee houses along "Exchange Alley" to meet with people offering stock. With no structure, regulation and limited newspapers success relied on personal contacts, rumour and luck.

It was only in 1698 the John Castaing created a list of stocks being offered that any form of structure was created.
