Why did German submarines bring America into WW1?

by yellowowls

I dont understand fully how the U-Boats brought in America, was it because submarines were new? or was it the way the German's used them during the war?

Thank you!

In 1917 Germany began a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in the Atlantic ocean to cut supplies to Britain - this meant the sinking of American ships and the killing of American citizens. It was in response to this that the US entered the war.

Therefore it was the way the U-boats were used - to attack American shipping, that brought the US into WW1.

Did Barbara Tuchman mislead us by stating that the Zimmerman Telegram was a, or the, major factor in bringing the US into World War 1?
