A lot of Israeli history, as one might guess, is dominated by the conflict it has been embroiled in since its birth in 1948. My recommendation for a book focused on Israel would be Israel: A History, by Martin Gilbert. Another good book that's shorter but less intensive is Israel: A Brief History by Bernard Reich. I know the first is kindle-available for $2.99, not sure about the second. Look for descriptions, let me know if you want something that might be different! Also note that they likely have bias on the conflict itself. I think the first is far better as Reich goes into ancient history and I don't believe he's up to date on archaeological findings and consensus.
