Narcotic Use in Christianity & Judaism?

by jim10040

I have heard a few stories, but nothing useful comes up in Google (I'm not phrasing well). In many cultures, narcotics have been used during religious ceremonies. Is this true with early Christianity and Judaism? If it is true, what was used and why, and when and why did it stop?

Its been inferred that some of the herbs/spices used in the holy of holies in the Temple of Jerusalem was marijuana, but much of the text cited as evidence is ambiguous at best. Additionally, marijuana is technically not a narcotic drug since it is not derived from the poppy plant. Drugs have played at most, a cursory role in Judaism.

Alcohol, on the other hand has played a relatively large role in the more observant communities. (Fabregens, tisches etc.)
