Given that Eratosthenes (276-194BC) understood the fact that at noon, the angle of the sun's rays depends on one's north-south location (which he used to estimate the Earth's circumference), he must have understood that as one travels east and west it affects the sun's location in the sky as well. But he was probably not the first to realize this.
