I was just doing some reading about Benjamin Franklin and something caught my eye in this painting. What is the object in the left of the picture, that seems like some sort of box with windows on it? I've never seen anything like that before.
It's a litter - basically a chair that allows the person sitting to be carried by 2 or more servants. Franklin is known to have used one, although he likely called it a "sedan chair" rather than a litter.
