I'm interested in apples-to-apples comparisons. So while I'm aware that, say, homosexuality may not have been as accepted in traditionally Muslim Indonesia than it was in traditionally animist Palau, was it more accepted in Indonesia than other traditionally Muslim countries?
Polynesia--yes. In Samoa and Tonga, there are men who live as women, called fa'afafine. They mostly date men but sometimes date women, and they're a socially accepted part of the culture.
Melanesia, on the other hand, is absolutely not accepting of homosexuality whatsoever, and I think that includes Fiji, which is really the border between Melanesia and Polynesia.
