Just spit balling here... it seems the timing lines up. Was it more that the Airwolf creators recognized the cool factor of this new chopper (the AH-64) and designed a show around the hype or is it at all possible that the Army unofficially nurtured it's creation to encourage pilot recruitment to counter soviet build up of tanks on the borders of Eastern Germany?
Is it possible? Sure. With a standard that low why not. Is there any evidence for it? Not that I know of. It is far more reasonable that it was taking off from the success of Blue Thunder which was made the year before. So there were two helicopter shows: Airwolf and Blue Thunder.
