How many US Navy ships were lost during world war 2 and also, was there any major naval battles during the Korean war?

by Steezymann

I know there were over 2000 Kamakazi attacks that had sunk 36 US Navy ships but I never heard the total number lost throughout the entire war. Also I hardly know a thing about the Korean war and was wondering if there was any large clashes at sea. All I hear about is the land fighting. I know I can Google this stuff but you guys are great with this stuff and always give more of an insight. Thank you!

There were a lot of US Navy ships lost during WWII. These included two battleships, four fleet carriers, one light carrier, six escort carriers, seven heavy and three light cruisers, 77 destroyers, twelve destroyer escorts and 52 submarines.

There were also a large number of smaller ships (gunboats, PT boats, LCTs, tugs, etc) lost as well.

I got these numbers from Navsource and history.navy.mil.

You'll note this doesn't include ships like the West Virginia, sunk at Pearl Harbor but raised and returned to service.
