Nicholas II was at the Russian Front when he received the news of Rasputin’s death, returning home at the insistence of his wife, Alexandra. Here is where accounts diverge. There are accounts of Nicholas looking relieved to observers when he was first told the news. There are others of him showing a deep sadness at the funeral of Rasputin, and Nicholas own journal does show some grief at the loss. An argument could be made that he was not overly saddened, as the assassins did not suffer imprisonment or execution for the murder. For the most part, they were confined to house arrest. Given the hold Rasputin had over Alexandra, and how Rasputin was a wedge between the Romanovs, the people of Russia and elements of the military, it seems fully plausible that Nicholas was not terribly upset at Rasputin’s passing , but was probably more sad for the grief of the Tsarina.
