The Meiji Restoration was the start of Imperial Japan. Imperial Japan essentially was a transition from the Shogunate model (where a figurehead Emperor reigned while a political-military leader, the Shogun, had more or less absolute power) to an "empire" more in line with Europe (like the German Empire, the British Empire, etc., which featured a constitutional monarch with varying levels of power against a parliament of some sort)
