The Vindolanda Tablets are a collection of letters written to and from the Roman garrison at Vindolanda on Hadrian's wall in the early/mod second century CE. One of the letters lists supplies to be purchased from a merchant, and one of the items on the list is pepper, which could only be gotten from south and southeast Asia at this time. There are a few other examples of pepper in Britain, but I believe that is the earliest.
